Dopamine Detox Phone Setup: A Step-by-Step Guide

You do not have to throw away your smartphone to regain your attention. Here is how to configure your iPhone for a digital detox.

A 'dopamine detox' involves temporarily reducing highly stimulating activities to reset your attention span. Because smartphones are the biggest source of digital stimulation, redesigning how you interact with your device is the first step.

Step 1: Eliminate the red dots

Red notification badges create a false sense of urgency. Go through your settings and disable badges for everything except essential communication (like phone calls or direct texts). Turn off all notifications for social media and news apps.

Step 2: Hide the infinite scroll

Remove all apps with infinite feeds from your home screen. Put them in the App Library or a deeply nested folder. If you want to check them, you should have to purposefully search for them. Out of sight, out of mind.

Step 3: The Grayscale default

The most crucial step in a digital detox is lowering the visual reward of the screen. Color is a primary driver of digital engagement. Switch your phone to grayscale. When your screen is black and white, the device feels like a tool rather than a slot machine.

Step 4: Smart friction

A strict detox often fails because you eventually need your phone for a functional task—like ordering an Uber or taking a photo. If your detox rules are too rigid, you will break them and abandon the setup.

Using an app like StayGray allows for smart friction. You can keep the detox active by staying in grayscale by default, but whitelist functional apps so they work normally. You get the benefits of the detox without breaking your daily workflow.

Maintaining the detox

A digital detox does not have to be a temporary weekend challenge. By setting up your phone this way, you create a sustainable environment for long-term focus. Make your phone boring, and you will find your real life much more interesting.
